And so it BEGINS…

Sometimes I wish things were different, but then again, don’t we all? They say leave the regrets behind and they are right! So I am leaving them behind and I am being grateful for what life gave me…I didn’t go to an art school as art “would never pay the bills” they said. Who? Everyone, my parents, my friends and especially in a country like Romania, art is still not even consider a profession! Sad but very true!

So I didn’t start this to make money, as you already know, I started drawing to beat depression and without knowing it, I became so good that people wanted to pay me for my artworks. I don’t even remember how that happened, I don’t even remember who my first “customer” was, but I know for sure it was a friend πŸ™‚ ). You always start with friends or relatives, they are trying to support you so they will be the first ones who’ll buy your drawings or paintings (although, keep in mind, if they are not good enough, even family and friends wouldn’t waist their money πŸ™‚ )

I still remember though how I didn’t have any proper pencils or erasers or paper for what matters ha ha ….so I had to order and I then realised…I didn’t know WHAT to order !

Thank God there are so many blogs and websites out there advising what and where to buy the right tools. Artists Starter Sets…and there are sooooo many ….how do you choose?! Easy…never go for the most expensive ones (only if you have money to splash out πŸ™‚ and look for the reviews. I live in UK and I find the best products on or Jacksons’ Art but when you are a beginner all you need is love :)) …and these:

  1. Sketchbook

2. Graphite Drawing Pencils

3. Kneaded Eraser

4. Art Pencil Sharpener

5. Ruler

The sketchbook is an essential supply for those learning to draw (you can sketch on anything really, if you don’t want to invest too much I’m sure you can find blank paper in your house like: last page of a bank statement, an envelope, a page from your kid’s notebook etc, newspaper etc)

If you still want to invest in a sketch book then look for A4 size (not too big not too small) and at least 70 gsm (paper’s thickness)

Tip:Β Once you’re more confident and you have learned the basics of drawing, you can move on to a drawing pad too as they have thicker paper, which is better for finished work.

Something like this should be enough πŸ™‚

or this

Next graphite drawing pencils….obviously, you can just use your kids’ pencils or the ones you might already have in your drawers but, I truly believe sets are great for beginners because they have an assortment of pencil types for drawing and shading (which you will learn and enjoy very much). The average six-pencil set will have a 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, and a 6B. but you should choose one that has an 8B too. These numbers correspond with the hardness of the graphite….meaning that the harder pencils will make lighter lines (2H and HB for example) and softer pencils will make darker lines (those with B). In terms of pencils, I have tried many but I would warmly recommend the Faber-Castell ones and this is the set I use:

Number 3 on the list Kneaded Eraser….SAY WHAAATTT?? Yes, that was my reaction :)) I thought there’s only one type of eraser….the …eraser :)) _

But let me tell you, you want the kneaded one!! And you need it!! This very special art eraser will not damage your precious paper (and believe me you are going to erase a lot in the beginning πŸ™‚ and it will not leave a residue behind (so less messy….unless you love mess ::). The magic part iiisss….It can be moulded into various shapes and used to erase large or small areas….yes. Kneaded erasers rule!!! This is my favourite of them all…and I’ve tried quite a few πŸ™‚

When you grow up a little I will tell you about another special eraser….can’t say anything now as I’m sure you’d quickly go and order it and you don’t need it now πŸ™‚ patience my dears!

4. Well of course it’s the sharpener….the art pencil sharpener! How else would you be able to use your new and nice graphite pencils after you’ve done so many lines and whatever beginners do πŸ™‚ Again, a lot of different ones to choose from, but I recommend the metal ones and Germans are the best in sharpeners (well in many things as you know) This is great and cheap Staedtler 51020 Metal Double Hole Sharpener

or maybe you want to try the famous TAA DAA

Helix Metal Desktop Sharpener for Standard and Jumbo Pencils

They say it’s a durable sharpening mechanism, it sharpens standard and maxi pencils (max size 10.5mm), it includes desk fastening clamp and it has 5 sharpening settings.

Great, now that we’ve sharpened our pencils….let’s do some straight lines and measuring…wiiiithhh theeee RULER !

Yeap, last one on our list today. A ruler is quite handy you know, maybe you already have one, if not, you will need it for drawing horizon lines, streets, structures (not soon though) , or anything else with straight lines. you’d better buy in a longer one at least 30cm, but you’ll need a 60+ cm one sooner or later. I recommend rulers made with stainless steel or anodised aluminium. as they are easy to keep clean but any will do in the beginning.

Whoaaa….that was a long chat, wasn’t it πŸ™‚ ?!

My hand actually hurts a bit after writing so much but I really enjoyed telling you a bit more about how I didn’t take any classes (once you become good you feel like telling everyone that you didn’t take any classes so they can say “Nooo waaaayyy….and you draw like this??” :)) and what I first bought when I decided I wanted to start drawing.

Next…I’ll show you some of my first “artworks” and I’ll talk more about where to find good advice on art.

Till then, do what you love and live life in colours!
